Ask Gov. Schwarzenegger to Veto Bill Giving Driver’s Licenses to Illegal Aliens

This is a special message for NumbersUSA members in California.

Dear California friends,

On August 31, the California State Legislature cleared a bill (SB 60) that would give driver's licenses to illegal aliens. It now awaits action by the Governor, who previously vetoed similar legislation.

The measure, which masquerades as an attempt to comply with the Federal REAL ID Act, would overturn a current law that requires applicants to show legal presence in California before they can obtain a driver's license.

The bill requires the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue driver's licenses that are REAL ID Act-compliant and, within 240 days thereafter, to issue driver's licenses that "permit driving but are not acceptable by a federal agency for any official purpose to those applicants who are not able to demonstrate legal presence status." As such, illegal aliens would be able to drive with the license but could not board airplanes or enter federal buildings when REAL ID requirements take effect.

Over 80 percent of the American public now opposes giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens. Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer certainly learned this when he introduced a plan to give REAL ID-compliant licenses to illegal aliens in November of 2007. He was forced to withdraw the plan, which embroiled Democratic presidential candidates in the controversy.

On September 5, 2003, California Governor Gray Davis signed a bill allowing illegal aliens to get driver's licenses. The voters of California were outraged, and subsequently booted him from office. Legislation repealing the law was quickly moved through the legislature and signed by the new governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, on December 1, 2003. Schwarzenegger had campaigned for governor by opposing the law, and it was clearly one of the factors that swept him into office.

In 2005 and 2006, Schwarzenegger vetoed bills that would have again given driver's license to illegal aliens. He now has another opportunity to keep his campaign promise.
